As parents and children settled in their seats, the sound of trumpets and saxophones echoed from the hallway.
Moments later, a group of junior high school students came into the auditorium, clutching their instruments as they took their seats.
The Wolf Point Junior High Band, comprised of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students, hosted their first concert of the year Oct. 22.
Wolf Point Junior/Senior High School music teacher Lynne Monson welcomed the audience to the show. She said the first concert of the year is fun for the band, as it gives students, who have no concert experience, a chance to perform in front of an audience for the first time.
The band played selections from Bruce Pearson’s Standard of Excellence Band Book. They beganthe concert with the song Lightly Row. They also performed Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Jingle Bells, Sweetly Sings the Donkey and Go Tell Bell.
After the first set of songs, the sixth- and seventh-grade students took a seat in the audience while the eighth-grade second-year band members played Pearson’s Calypso Morning.
Monson said the eighth-graders took on roles as teachers to help their younger classmates.
Charles Doney, an eighth-grader, played drums for the first time this year. Although he mainly played the saxophone, Monson asked him to move to drums to help strengthen the percussion section of the band. He said playing with the drums at the concert was a different experience for him.
Jacob Boysun is an eighth-grader who plays the trumpet and also helps the younger band members. He said seeing the progress made by the younger band members made him feel good.
In the spirit of Halloween, the band ended the concert with Rob Grice’s Zombie Stomp.
The junior high and high school bands will play their next concert Nov. 22-23.
I’ve had the opportunity to cover different bands in the last few years. the Wolf Point students were pretty talented, as were the Medical Lake students. I said this about sports, but if you have the opportunity to watch high school band concert, I say go for it. You will not be disappointed.
