Note: This is a story I wrote for Cage Pages about Cris “Cyborg” Justino and her desire to see a women’s 145-pound division in the UFC.
After having her first UFC experience, Cris “Cyborg” Justino now wants the promotion to establish a women’s 145-pound division.
In a recent Facebook post, the Invicta FC featherweight champion said she “deserves her own division.”
“These girls didn’t want to fight me in my weight class and now fans want me to face them for no belt, or risk my health to chase theirs…this is not fair,” Justino wrote. “I’ve earned the right to fight in my division and women deserve an equal opportunity to compete.”
Justino made her octagon debut at UFC 198 where she finished Leslie Smith in the first round. It was a Cyborg performance that many MMA faithful had seen in the past – only on a higher scale. UFC fans now know what hardcore combat sports connoisseurs have realized for decades – Cyborg is the real deal.
A UFC women’s 145 division would Justino a chance to fight in the UFC on a more frequent basis.
Adding a women’s featherweight division might sound like a pipedream to longtime MMA fans, but most of us remember a time when UFC President Dana White said women would never fight in the UFC.
