I’ll be short and sweet.
Right now, I will come out and say it. I was never really a big Bill Goldberg fan during his heyday in WCW.
I thought he had mystique, a good physique and a badass appeal to him. But after seeing him run through the Dungeon of Doom for the fourth time – while he was the WCW World Heavyweight champion – I was over the hype.
I wasn’t particularly impressed with his short WWE run either. Fast forward to 2016 and now we have a rematch between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. I’ll admit I wasn’t really looking forward to this bout, especially since their first encounter at Wrestlemania XX stunk up Madison Square Garden. But after some thought and seeing the former NFL player return to Raw I put my skepticism aside and said “good for him.”
It was cool to see Goldberg get an ovation from the crowd when he returned to the WWE. Although I wasn’t a big mark for him, there are several wrestling fans who are – my stepdad being one of them. It’s understandable. His WCW run was one of the many highlights of the Monday Night Wars – specifically around 1998.
Another highlight of Goldberg’s return was seeing him bring his son to the ring. I’ve heard in the past about wrestlers who have been away from the business having one match to give their child an opportunity to see them wrestle.
As for Survivor Series, I’ll hold my judgement. It probably won’t be a five star match, but Lesnar can give a good performance when he’s motivated and it will be interesting to see if Goldberg still has it.
