Former women’s champion Mickie James returns to WWE – or rather will make her NXT debut – against NXT women’s champion Asuka at Takeover:Toronto. It’s an interesting matchup.
James spent some time on the indies before she made her WWE debut in 2006. She had a great program – or at least I thought so – with Trish Stratus and won the title from her at Wrestlemania 22. She also became one of the women wrestlers who carried the torch for the division after Stratus and Lita retired. After WWE, James went on to release some albums, capture TNA gold and started a family.
I think this will be a good match, though I wonder how James and Asuka will mesh in the ring. Asuka likes to work rough but James is known to get down and dirty. This could also bring the Emperess of Tomorrow some heel heat before she enters a program with Ember Moon down the road. That said, I don’t think anyone wants to boo Asuka right now.
At the very least, a win over James gives Asuka more credibility in her NXT/WWE tenure.
As for James, a match with Asuka allows her to have one more good match in a WWE ring. I’ve heard that her appearance is supposed to be a one-night-only deal, but it could lead to bigger things like a coach’s position at the Performance Center. I’d also like to see James go into the Hall of Fame.
